Kelly Jordan was called to the Bar in 1995 and she has since
practiced in Toronto in the areas of family law, wills and estate
planning, and assisted reproductive technologies. A partner at
Jordan Battista, Kelly runs the firm’s family law department, which
handles all aspects of family law and families, whether they be
marrying, cohabiting, adopting, separating or divorcing. Her
practice in this area runs from drafting Separation Agreements to
litigating for custody, support or property rights. She also does a
significant amount of work with clients who use assisted
reproductive technologies, including surrogacy agreements,
ovum/sperm donor agreements and obtaining declarations of parentage.
Kelly practices family law for every kind of family. Kelly has a
broad and diverse client base, and like the rest of the lawyers at
Jordan Battista, she has an acknowledged expertise in assisting
clients in all family structures, including those in same sex
relationships. Kelly was co-counsel on two occasions before the
Supreme Court of Canada in Baker v. Francis (1999) and Miglin v.
Miglin (2002). She is serving as the Treasurer for the National Family Law Executive of the Canadian Bar Association. She is the former Chair of the Family Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association where she has served on the executive since 1998. She is a panel member of the Office of the Children’s
Lawyer and Chair of the Advisory Panel on Family Law to the Board of
Legal Aid Ontario 2003-2005.
Kelly is a frequent speaker and guest on issues pertaining to family
law including adoption, assisted human reproduction, and common law
couples. Kelly has addressed Ontario family law judges at their
Annual Family Law Program and has also been a conference speaker at
many other events including conferences organized by Law Society of
Upper Canada, the Ontario Bar Association, the University of
Toronto, and Queen's University.
Kelly has volunteered extensively in the community, including
serving as a Director on the Board of Directors at the AIDS
Committee of Toronto for four years. She established a legal clinic
staffed by volunteer lawyers and law students which provided wills
and estate documents for people living with HIV/AIDS. She also co-ordinated
a satellite student legal clinic at the AIDS Committee of Toronto.
Kelly has been recognized by her peers. She was named as a leading family law practitioner in October 2007 by Canadian Lexpert Directory and was chosen by her peers as one of Canada’s Best Lawyers 2010.
